Geelong West weatherboard cottage renovation for a growing family
Briody Constructions recently completed a beautiful transformation of an old weatherboard cottage in Geelong West, tailored to meet the needs of a growing family. The goal was to create a seamless extension and renovation that maximised natural light and improved functionality while maintaining the home’s charming heritage appeal. The north-facing backyard was a key focus of the extension, designed to draw as much natural light as possible through the house and maximise the available space. To maintain a cohesive look, we ensured the new structure blended seamlessly with the existing home. Modern, durable materials like James Hardie linear weatherboard were used in place of traditional timber, providing durability and long-term performance. We also incorporated double-glazed windows and enhanced insulation to make the home more energy-efficient, ensuring it stays warm in winter and cool in summer.
Attention to detail was critical in ensuring the extension looked as though it had always been part of the original home. We matched the heritage cornices and sourced reclaimed Baltic pine floorboards to ensure a seamless transition from the old to the new sections of the house.
The kitchen renovation was another highlight of this project. While located in the original kitchen space, the new layout, high ceilings, and large windows created a bright and welcoming area. The oven, set within the original fireplace, retained a unique touch of the home’s history.
A large opening now connects the kitchen to the newly extended living area, where large glazing and double doors open to the outdoor entertaining area and backyard—ideal for family gatherings and everyday enjoyment.
Despite challenges like heritage overlays and tight boundary spaces, this project was a resounding success. Our clients now have a stylish, functional home that honours its history while providing modern comfort.
